Abstract
This thesis discusses illocutionary acts that are used by the participants of videos on Youtube channel, namely Jubilee. This Youtube channel contains various contents related to social issues that are divided into several series. One of the series is Middle Ground. The aims of this research are to identify the types of illocutionary acts and illocutionary functions that are used by the participants. The sources of data are four videos that are taken from a playlist, namely ‘Best Of’ of Middle Ground with the most viewers until August 9th, 2019. This research uses an observational method with a non-participant observation technique by transcribing the utterances with the help of the English subtitle. Furthermore, in analyzing data, this research uses context to classify the types of illocutionary acts and illocutionary functions. The result of the analysis indicates that the participants of the discussions use four types of illocutionary acts. Those types are (1) assertive, (2) directive, (3) commissive, (4) expressive. Among those four types, assertive is the most dominant type of illocutionary act because the participants tend to assert their utterance when uttering something. On the other hand, this research shows three illocutionary functions that are used by the participants, namely (1) competitive, (2) convivial, (3) collaborative. Collaborative is the most dominant function. This is interpreted that when the speaker aims something tolerable with society, they use this function. Keywords: illocutionary acts, types, functions.
