Abstract

Japan has a lot of experience with the nuclear issue, starting from being directly affected by nuclear weapons in 1945 to a nuclear accident in 2011. The nuclear issue continues to grow from utilization in several sectors to being used as a tool to threaten international security. The purpose of this research is to see Japan's role as a non nuclear weapon state in the NPT. The research method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach and data collection techniques are library research. Japan's role in the NPT was analyzed using the concept of role theory according to K.J Holsti modified by Glenn Chafetz where there were 13 roles in studying the nuclear issue. Japan in strengthening the NPT has 4 roles, for example with eight proposal items, protectee with an alliance with the United States, the regional subsystem collaborator with its role in the EAS, and global system collaborator with its role in NPDI with NNWS as identity.
