Abstract

Western fast food is one of foods that are popular with teenagers. Consumption of western fast food is related to the total fat and fat associated with eating patterns, which increasing the risk of obesity. Western fast food also contains high concentrate of sodium, so it can increase the risk of hypertension. This study aims to determine the relationship between western fast food consumption with body mass index and blood pressure in class X students of SMAN 1 Padang. Subjects consist of 64 people from 317 class X students of SMAN 1 Padang, using systematic random sampling technique. Method was conducted using a questionnaire to get the frequency of consumption of western fast food, followed by measuring body weight, height, and blood pressure. Data analysis was performed using correlation tests. The study was conducted from May to December 2019. The results showed the median value of body mass index is 19,79 kg/m2, systolic blood pressure is 110 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure is 80 mmHg, and frequency of western fast food consumption for the last month is 15,3 times per month. In this research found a negative correlation between the frequency of western fast food consumption with BMI (r= -0,094, p=0,460), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (r= -0,130, p=0,304) and positive correlation with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (r= 0,045, p=0,722). The results of this study indicate that the majority of class X students of SMAN 1 Padang have normal body mass index and blood pressure, and no relationship between frequency of consumption of western fast food with body mass index and blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic.
