Abstract

This study is about the use of English that occurs from the three chef’s utterances in the Chef’s Table television program on Net.tv which re-uploaded on Youtube. The purpose of this study is to find the types of code-switching and probable reasons or causes for code-switching happened. Data were collected using an observation method that was supported by non-participant observation technique (Sudaryanto (1988)). Data were analyzed using the theory of Hoffman (1991) which states that there are three types of code-switching and seven types of reasons for someone to switch code. To analyze the reasons for code-switching, supporting theories are also used (Crystal (1987), Malik (1994), Anderson (2006), and Muthusamy (2009)). The analysis data shows that there are two types of code-switching used by the chefs, which are the code-switching within a sentence or intra-sentential switching and the code-switching between sentences or inter-sentential switching. Meanwhile, the reasons of the chefs do code-switching can be categorized into eleven terms. Only four of them are included in the Hoffman (1991) category. While seven others can be classified into other categories. The result of the analysis data was presented using formal and informal method. The results of this study also showed that code-switching was mostly found when the speakers cooking Western food. Keywords: code-switching, inter-sentential and intra-sentential.
