Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis discusses the politeness principle used by Ellen when interviewing George W. Bush on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show". George as a guest star and Ellen as the host. The provision of data is using observation method supported by non-participant observation technique. For data analysis the politeness principle theory used by Leech (1983) and the function of language theory proposed by Leech (1974). Presentation of the results of the analysis is done by descriptively. From 47 data conversations between Ellen and George found 1) 15 data of Approbation maxim (31.9%), 2) 11 data of Agreement maxim (23.4%), 3) 9 data of Sympathy maxim (19.1%), 4) 5 data of Generosity maxim (10.7%), 5) 4 data of Tack maxim (8.5%), and 6) 3 data of Modesty maxim (6.4%). Among the six maxims found, Approbation maxim was the most frequent maxim. This happened because when interviewing, George tried to convey Ellen's politeness. The function of language of politeness principle is 1) 21 conversations that use the phatic function (53.8%), 2) 13 conversations that use expressive functions (33.4%), 3) 2 conversations that use information functions (5.1%), 4) 2 conversations which used aesthetic functions (5.1%), and 5) 1 conversation that uses directive functions (2.6%). The phatic function most often arises with the aim of maintaining Ellen's politeness towards George when communicating so that communication runs effectively.
