Abstract

This research was carried out in smallholder oil palm plantations at Pulau Punjung, Timpeh and Koto Besar in the Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatera, and in the laboratory of Andalas University Campus III Dharmasraya from July to September 2018. This study aimed to identify the pest and diseases present and to calculate the intensity of pest attacks and diseases in community palm oil plantations consiting of plants aged between 4 and 6 years and covering no more than 1ha. Samples were collected randomly. Six pests were identified : fire caterpillar (Darna trima), sacred caterpillars (Mahasena corbetti), looper caterpillar (Hyposidra talaca), rat (Rattus tiominicus), long tailed ape (Macaca fascularis), and wild boar. Four diseases were found : leaf rust (Cephleuros virescens), bunch rot (Marasmius palmivorus), anthranosa (Culvullaria), and crown disease. Plants with “Chimeras”, Cu, B, and K deficiency were also found. The most dominant pest was the rat (on average 30% of the oil palms showed symptoms). Rats caused the most damage to oil palms in Pulau Punjung. The dominant disease found in the field was leaf rust, all oil palm plants sampled were infected. Keyword : Diseases, intensity of attacks, oil palm, pests
