Abstract

This research aims to analyze face-threatening acts existed in Walt Disney Pixar Luca (2021). The data were taken from the utterance that was performed by Ercole Visconti towards Luca Paguro and Alberto Scorfano. Qualitative research was employed in this research, involving a close reading of the movie script to obtain the data, and was analyzed using the politeness theory proposed by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson (1987). This led to the findings that both positive and negative face-threatening acts are present in the movie. Positive face occurs more dominantly than negative face. Of the 31 utterances analyzed, 22 belong to utterances that threatened positive face, while the remaining 9 utterances belong to negative face, indicating Ercole dominantly attacks the hearers’ desire to be accepted, respected, and appreciated by others through insult, ridicule, humiliation, and social exclusion. Meanwhile, negative face occurs through threats, commands, and utterances that restrict the hearers’ freedom of action. Furthermore, the research shows that the influence of three social factors that cause FTAs to occur in the movie is power (P), social distance (D), and rank of imposition (R). Among these factors, power is the most dominant factor. Of the 31 utterances analyzed, 20 belong to power (P), 7 belong to social distance (D), and 4 belong to the rank of imposition (R). This indicates that Ercole positions himself as a superior figure within the social environment of Portorrosso.
