Abstract

The use of onomatopoeia in multimodal storytelling plays an important role in conveying scenes, especially in reading applications such as Webtoon. This study analyzes the translation of onomatopoeia in the story of the School Bus Graveyard from episodes 1- 48 of season 1. The objective of this study was to identify the forms of onomatopoeia in School Bus Graveyard Webtoon (Season 1) according to their sound sources and to analyze what strategies translators used to translate the onomatopoeia. By focusing on identifying the types of onomatopoeia and classify it base on the sound source and translation strategy, this study analyzes 145 onomatopoeic expressions found in 48 episodes of the Webtoon. The theoretical frameworks used in this study are Körtvélyessy and Štekauer’s classification of onomatopoeia and Aixelá’s Culture-Specific Items (CSI) translation strategies. The most common type of onomatopoeia found are sounds coming from humans, especially parts of the body, indicating that the Webtoon School Bus Graveyard relies more on the sounds produced by characters' movements and physical activities to support the mystery and survival narration. While Culture-specific items by Aixela were mostly found in the Naturalization of the Substitution category indicating that the translator translates the English onomatopoeic expression to ones that is more familiar to Indonesian readers. Overall, the findings shows that even when an onomatopoeia is stated as a culture-specific items, it is still possible to translate them from one language to another by prioritizing familiarness for the target readers.
