Abstract

This thesis discusses the translation procedures used in translating noun phrases containing indefinite articles in George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm and its Indonesian translation. This study aims to analyze the translation procedures used to translate noun phrases containing indefinite articles and identify how the translator translated the indefinite articles in the noun phrases into Indonesian. The objects used in this study are George Orwell’s English novel Animal Farm and its Indonesian translation by Djokolelono entitled Republik Hewan. This translation version is the latest of translations which published in 2021. The theories used are the translation procedure theory by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) and the translation of English indefinite articles into Indonesian by Nadar (1996). Based on the data collection, the number of noun phrases containing indefinite articles in both works is 423 data. The data analysis that has been conducted shows that there are 5 out of 7 procedures used by the translator in translating noun phrases containing English indefinite articles into Indonesian, namely modulation (204 data), literal translation (114), transposition (100 data), borrowing (4 data) and equivalence (1 data). Modulation is the most frequently used procedure. Meanwhile, the translator translated the indefinite articles in the noun phrases into three forms, namely omission (297 data), classifier (93), using suatu or satu (33 data). Omission is the most dominant translation because English indefinite articles are often removed in phrases when translated into Indonesian.
