Abstract

Adaptation of a novel can be found in various mediums such as film, video games, and other media. Adaptation might change the narrative structure of a novel in order to maintain the authenticity of the original source. This thesis analyzes the narrative transformation of the novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) written by J. K. Rowling in 1998 to its Gameboy Advance adaptation version with the same title published by EA Games in 2001. This research aims to find out addition and alteration of narrative elements found in the Gameboy Adaptation compared to the original novel. This thesis applies theory of adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and theory of narrative developed by Tzvetan Todorov to break down the narrative element. The researcher uses a qualitative method in conducting the research. The result shows narrative transformation brings a whole new experience with several structure and thematic changes. The role of gameplay mechanics also emphasize the gameplay as a single-player focused on Harry. However the Gameboy Adaptation sacrificed some novel details by focusing on Hogwarts exploration.
