Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of pauses and gaps in conversations between Air Traffic Controller (ATC) and pilots using the Conversation Analysis (CA) approach. Communication between ATC and pilots is crucial in aviation because it is related to flight safety. To this end, punctuality in conversations is crucial. The data in this study were obtained from 79 recorded conversations between ATC and pilots with a duration ranging from 30 to 50 seconds for each excerpt. This study used a qualitative method with a conversation analysis approach to identify and classify the types of silences that appeared, namely pauses that occurred within the speech and gaps that occurred in Turn-Taking. The results showed a total of 399 pauses consisting of 135 pauses and 264 gaps. This finding indicates that gaps occurred more frequently than pauses in ATC and pilot conversations, indicating a waiting time (2-3 seconds) in the turn-taking process. Pilots and ATC must wait for the other person to complete their transmission before responding, resulting in more gaps than pauses. However, the pause found did not disrupt smooth communication and were in accordance with the characteristics of radio communication between the pilot and ATC. This study is expected to contribute to understanding pause patterns in aviation communication and serve as a reference for further research in the field of conversation analysis, especially in the context of professional communication.
