Abstract
The effect of ethanolic extract of ranti leaves {Solanum nigrum Linn.) to the blood glucose level on diabetic mice induced by alloxan (150 mg/KgBB) has been investigated. The research was carried out experimentally using 20 male mice(4 groups) about 2-3 months old that 20-30 grams of body weight. Group I was a positive control. Group II, III, and IV where induced diabetic mice treated with extract at variabel doses of 125, 250 and 500 mg/Kg of body weight, respectively. The suspension of Solanum nigrum L. extract was administered orally once a day for 7 days. The blood glucose level, body weight,24 hour food intake, urine output, water intake, liver ratio and pancreatic ratio were determined. The study data was analyzed using one and two-ways ANOVA followed by Duncan post hock test. Results showed that the blood glucose levels in the animals treated with ranti leaves was lower compared to positive control significantly (P<0.01). This effect was followed by increased in the body weight, decreased in 24 hour food intake, urine output and water intake significantly (P<0.05). However, there was no significant effects on the liver and pancreatic ratios (P>0.01). It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract ofSolanum nigrum L. leaves reduces the blood glucose effect on induced diabetic mice.
