Abstract

This research analyzes the stylistic features of Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find using Leech and Short’s (2007) framework, which connects linguistic form with literary meaning. The study aims to identify and interpret both micro-level devices—such as repetition, deixis, and foregrounding—and macro-level devices, including irony and Gothic elements. These features are examined to explain how O’Connor’s language contributes to the story’s atmosphere, characterization, and moral vision. Using qualitative descriptive method, the study collects data from dialogues and narrative passages that illustrate stylistic patterns. The findings reveal that micro-level devices establish the Southern Gothic tone and expose deeper pholosophical issues such as morality, nihilism, and faith. The integration of these stylistic levels demonstrates that O’Connor’s narrative style not only creates aesthetic and emotional effects but also embodies the tension between violence, belief, and the possibility of grace. Therefore, stylistic analysis provides valuable insight into how linguistic choices shape the moral and existential dimensions of O’Connor’s fiction.
