Abstract

This research examines the linguistic landscape of top-down signboards at Museum Adityawarman in Padang, West Sumatra. The study investigates the types of languages used on signs, their composition, multilingual writing strategies, and compliance with Indonesia’s language policy. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through photographs of 144 top-down signboards displayed in the museum. The data were analyzed using Reh’s (2004) typology of multilingual writing strategies. The results indicate that most signs are written primarily in Indonesian and English. A few bilingual signs combine Indonesian with Minangkabau, usually for proper names, or with Latin, mainly for the scientific names of spices. Among monolingual signs, 41 are entirely in Indonesian, and one is in Minangkabau, located in the rendang exhibition room. The most common multilingual writing strategy is duplicating, followed by fragmentary, complementary, and overlapping strategies. Overall, the findings suggest that the museum generally complies with national language policy, using additional languages to accompany Indonesian rather than replace it. Minor deviations, such as fragmentary or overlapping strategies and the single Minangkabau monolingual sign, indicate areas for improvement. The frequent use of Indonesian and English as primary and accompanying languages reflects the museum’s efforts to provide inclusive information for both domestic and international visitors.
