Abstract

Background: Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Quality of life in children with intellectual disability is generally lower than the general population. Quality of life assessment has important clinical implications in designing appropriate interventions and identifying specific areas requiring special attention. However, its relationship with Intelligence Quotient levels requires further exploration, particularly in Indonesia. Methods: An analytical observational study with cross-sectional design was conducted among 95 children with intellectual disability aged 12-18 years at Special Schools in Padang City. IQ levels were assessed using the CPM and CFIT instruments and quality of life was measured using the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales parent-report version. Bivariate analysis using Chi-Square test evaluated the relationship between IQ level and quality of life. Results: The majority of subjects had mild intellectual disability with a mean IQ score of 52.8. A total of 68.4% of children had impaired quality of life with a mean score of 57.7. There was a highly significant relationship between IQ level and quality of life (p<0.001). Parental education and family socioeconomic status also significantly influenced quality of life. Conclusion: IQ level is significantly associated with quality of life in children with intellectual disability, with environmental and family factors providing important contributions to child well-being.
