Abstract

A midwife is a person who acts to assist in the birth process by using spiritual powers and simple tools in carrying out the birth process. The formulation of the research problem is, What are the social reasons for pregnant women to choose a midwife as a birth attendant? The purpose of this study is to describe the mother's knowledge about pregnancy, pregnancy care, birth attendants (midwives and village midwives), describe the social reasons for mothers to choose a midwife as a birth attendant (because of motive and in order to motive). The phenomenological theory pioneered by Alfred Schutz focuses on a person's motives for acting. Phenomenological theory explains social phenomena by understanding human behavior within the actor's own frame of reference. The method used is qualitative, with a descriptive approach, aimed at providing a detailed picture of a social problem. Informants were selected using purposive sampling. From the research results, it is known that pregnant women have known that pregnancy is a condition where the stomach carries a child for approximately nine months, pregnant women consume nutritious food, get enough rest, and follow the advice of midwives so that they and the baby they are carrying are always healthy and safe, Midwives are someone who plays a very active role in pregnancy problems and the treatment of various diseases, while midwives and existing health workers are only occasionally asked for help by pregnant women and residents. The choice of giving birth using non-medical personnel is based on or caused by various reasons from each pregnant woman, such as (a) the existence of interaction before giving birth with a traditional midwife, in daily life and during pregnancy mothers are always in contact with traditional midwives, all of which form an unbroken chain between pregnant women and traditional midwives (b) because of hereditary habits, choosing a traditional midwife as a birth attendant is a tradition (c) the habits of neighbors or the surrounding environment, as long as someone sees the traditional midwife successful in handling the birth of their neighbor, it is very likely that they will choose the same traditional midwife to help with the birth process (d) the existence of changing midwives, midwives are people from outside the area and have obligations to serve or be on duty at the Community Health Center and Hospital. This is the reason why midwives are often not present (e) expecting the traditional healer to come down to bathe, after giving birth the interaction with the traditional healer still continues, such as asking the traditional healer to directly lead the bathing ceremony and (f) because of the view that the traditional healer is more experienced while the midwife is still young, people in rural areas trust the traditional healer more than the midwife because the midwife is considered to be young and does not have much experience.
