Abstract

This research analyses the themes of women's oppression and rebellion as depicted in Amulya Malladi's novel, "The Mango Season." The study aims to analyze how the patriarchal society in India influences the lives of women in India. The analysis highlights how Malladi presents the influence of patriarchal society, especially the rigid expectations surrounding men and women, and the the oppression that faced by Indian women. It highlights the strict societal norms that dictate gender roles and the significant gap between the lives of men and women in India. The study also examines the rebellion that arises from this oppression, showing how the control exerted by men leads women to challenge societal norms. The novel portrays how these societal pressures result in both silent suffering and active resistance from women. Key forms of oppression examined include forced marriage and the perception of unmarried daughters as burdens. In response to this, the narrative also emphasizes women’s rebellion as a form of resistance against male control and societal expectations. A qualitative descriptive method is used in this research, Simone de Beauvoir Existential Feminism as defines in her book The Second Sex (1949) and Sylvia Walby’s forms of patriarchy as described in her book Theorising Patriarchy (1990) are applied in this research to help the analysis. The findings indicate that "The Mango Season" serves as a critical commentary on the struggles of Indian women, revealing the complexities of gender relations and the societal expectations that shape their lives.
