Abstract

This thesis analyzes the resistance and internalization toward misogyny and sexism in The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis. Through this research, the writer aims to see how the author shows misogyny and sexism toward the female characters. Also, it aims to explore how these female characters respond to it, whether they resist it or not. This thesis applies the theories of Misogyny by Kate Manne, Sexism by Glick and Fiske, then Feminist Existentialism by Simone de Beauvoir. This research uses a qualitative method to explain the results of the data descriptively. The findings show that the misogyny in this novel is shown through female objectification and gender-based violence. Meanwhile, forms of sexism are shown through judging girls based on their appearance and labelling female rage as proof that women are too sensitive. This thesis also explains how three female characters, Alex, Peekay, and Sara, succeed in resisting the misogyny and sexism through female solidarity and create a safe space by confronting the perpetrators of misogyny and sexism. Meanwhile, a female character who failed to resist misogyny and sexism, Branley, internalizes these two values as a part of her personality. She is trapped in patriarchal feminine role-play as a narcissist who always seeks male validation because she cannot stand as herself.
