Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques used by translator in translating detective terminologies in the novel Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess (2006) by Nancy Springer, and how these techniques affect the meaning of the translation. The Indonesian version entitled Kisah Misteri Enola Holmes: Kasus Hilangnya Sang Marquess (2020) by Rifky Ravanto Putra. This study uses a qualitative method that focuses on words and phrases that are detective terms. Then, the terms found are analyzed utilizing the translation technique theory by Molina & Albir (2002) and the semantic change theory by David Crystal (1994). The results of this study show that there are 10 translation techniques used by the translator; literal translation (49), borrowing (37), modulation (33), reduction (16), transposition (10), generalization (7), linguistic amplification (5), particularization (4), amplification (1), and linguistic compression (1). Furthermore, since the most frequently used translation technique is literal translation, there is little change in meaning in the translated novel because the meaning remains the same. Changes in meaning are often found in the generalization and particularization techniques because these two techniques change the level of specificity of the original meaning, leading to either an expansion or a narrowing of meaning.
