Abstract

Problem statement: Hydropower sources have the highest share among the energy sources in Indonesia with a total installed capacity estimated around 2,5GW. However an unused hydropower source is much higher than the used one, which is estimated around 9GW. But much of them are available as low head and small flow rate sources. There are limited numbers of turbine for low head and small flow rate are available in the marketplace. By this condition, using high head turbine for low head applications could be a good choice. Nevertheless, the characteristic of the turbine when apply at head lower than its design is not yet available in the textbook especially for the Crossflow turbine. Approach: In order to find this characteristic especially the characteristic of efficiency performance for variation of head application, the numerical simulation was done by simulating the turbine in the variation of head. Results: Based on the simulations, it was found that no significant change of efficiencies when heads are higher than theirs design value. Nevertheless, there are linearly decrease of efficiencies when turbine are applied at head lower than its design value. But it is still possible to operate Crossflow turbine at head lower than 50% of its design, where the efficiency value in this condition is still considerably high around 72,573%
