Abstract

This study examines the impoliteness strategies employed in the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, focusing on both the host and guests as observed through a YouTube video of the program. The research aims to identify the types and functions of impoliteness strategies found in interaction on the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through repeated and careful observation of the video. The analysis is grounded in Culpeper’s (1996) framework for impoliteness strategies and Culpeper’s (2011) framework for the function of impoliteness strategies. The findings reveal 25 instances of impoliteness strategies, categorized into five types: bald on record (2 instances), positive impoliteness (7), negative impoliteness (3), sarcasm or mock politeness (12), and withhold politeness (1). Regarding function, the data show affective impoliteness (10 instances), coercive impoliteness (1), and entertaining impoliteness (14). Sarcasm or mock politeness emerges as the most frequently used strategy, while entertaining impoliteness is identified as the most dominant function. These results highlight the significant role of impoliteness, particularly for entertainment purposes, in the context of televised talk shows.
