Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the theme of gender dysphoria in Jeffrey Eugenides' novel Middlesex (2002). The novel focuses on the journey and struggles experienced by Calliope Stephanides, who is eventually known as Cal Stephanides, as an intersex individual. This study emphasizes the issue of gender dysphoria and the impact of this condition on emotional imbalance and self-acceptance. The purpose of this study is to dismantle the various narratives used by Eugenides in expressing the issue of gender dysphoria by finding elements in the work through close reading. This study uses Cleanth Brooks' literary criticism theory in his book The Well Wrought (1947), which discusses elements in literature. The findings of this analysis show that literary elements that are used in exploring the complexity of gender dysphoria, which is reflected through family expectations, societal expectations, and also internal aspects within Cal Stephanides. In addition, this analysis also reveals that gender dysphoria in this novel also affects emotional imbalance, such as confusion, anxiety, and feelings of alienation, as a result of gender dysphoria. In addition, this emotional imbalance also leads Cal to the stage of self-acceptance because the inner struggle leads him to understand his identity. So, this study reveals gender dysphoria through elements of literary criticism and the impact of gender dysphoria, specifically emotional imbalance and self-acceptance.
