Abstract

Expressing experiences and representing events is one of the functions of language in everyday life. This research aims to discover the transitivity system distribution and identify the similarities and differences between two press releases released by WWF International and Greenpeace International in response to the 2024 global climate report regarding using the transitivity system by looking at the interpretation from the most dominant process. This research uses a descriptive research method with a qualitative approach. This method was chosen because it is suitable for examining data in texts relevant to the research topic, particularly those that require in-depth interpretation of meaning and context. This research finds that WWF uses material processes as the dominant process, with 27 occurrences out of 59 clauses (45.76%), and Greenpeace uses 36 out of 58 clauses (62.06%). The similarities between these two texts are found using transformative processes from material and other processes. Differences are found in the creative material process, where Greenpeace uses it more variably than WWF. The use of actors, tone, and solution offerings differs between the texts. The result reflects the communication strategy of each NGO: WWF emphasizes collective responsibility and hopes for global cooperation. In contrast, Greenpeace underlines the need for climate justice and accountability to dominant actors perceived to be blocking change.
