Abstract
This thesis discusses the conflict between illicit love and faith in the novel entitled The End of The Affair by Graham Greene. This research aims to look at how the experience of a character in living an illicit love that will make them begin to doubt their faith, which will eventually lead to a crisis in terms of identity and moral values. This research will also discuss how Greene will build moral conflicts and complex character dynamics that are closely related to illicit love and faith. In addition, this research will also explain how the moral message of this novel will be understood by beginning readers. This research uses a close reading of the text and qualitative method. This research applies New Criticism theory that focuses on formal elements in literary works, namely symbolism, imagery, irony, paradox, and ambiguity. Through close textual analysis, the study reveals the nuanced interplay between desire and faith, highlighting the character’s internal struggles, ethical dilemmas, and the transformative impact of love and their spiritual beliefs and relationships. The result of this research shows an analysis of the complexities of human relationships and the moral dilemmas that arise from the intersection of illicit love and faith.
