Abstract

Urethral catheter is a device mounted on the urinary tract which aims to help remove urine and retrieving sampels for laboratory examination. The use of urethral catheter is indicated for patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Neurogenic bladder dysfunction more common in patients with neurological disorders. The use of urethral catheters are at risk for contamination of urine that can cause urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The purpose of this study was to determine the type of bacteria that cause contamination of urinary catheter. This study uses a descriptive cross sectional design on catheter urine samples from 34 patients in Neurology Ward Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital Padang during the months from July to December, 2015. This research found types of bacteria were Staphylococcus sp. (31,5%) , Pseudomonas sp. 31,5%), Coliform sp. (15,7), Klebsiella sp. (10,5%), Escherichia sp (5,5%) , and Streptococcus sp.(5,5%). Prevalence of CAUTI in women is 64,7% and in men 47%. The highest infection in the age group 51-60 years. Indication for uretral catheter is stroke (63,1%), meningitis (15,7%), spinal disease & injury (5,5%). From this research it could be concluded that types of bacteria found were Staphylococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Coliform sp., Klebsiella sp., Escherichia sp , and Streptococcus sp. More infection in female patients than males. The highest infection in the eldery age group. Most indications for urethral catheter is stroke.
