Abstract

This study explores various types of abbreviations in the seven editions of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Palm Oil Buyers Scorecards to convey sustainable palm oil practices. This analysis is conducted within Lieber and Crystal’s abbreviations types and their characteristics theory. By using the qualitative approach, this study focuses on the six types of abbreviations: Blending, Acronyms, Initialisms, Clipping, Awkward Case, and Facetious Form, and examines the functions of abbreviations used. The result shows that from all seven editions of WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecards, 138 abbreviations are obtained, which consist of 104 (75.36%) initialisms as the frequently used type, 14 (10.14%) awkward cases, 13 (9.42%) acronyms, 4 (2.90%) blendings, 3 (2.17%) clippings, and zero facetious forms as the least used type. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that abbreviations represent brand names, regulations, legal authorities, and specific terms of the agricultural and business fields. This study emphasizes that abbreviations are essential in linguistics to facilitate effective and efficient communication by shortening the original words.
