Abstract
The demands of the manufacturing industry today and in the future require improving product quality and productivity while minimizing costs and optimizing time, energy, and resource usage. One approach to achieving this is by increasing machining speed and optimizing all process variables, including the use of cutting fluids. The use of palm oil-based cutting fluid with the inclusion of banana peel cellulose fibers is expected to enhance the surface smoothness of machined products. This study involved the turning process of medium carbon steel (AISI 4340) with a workpiece length of 30 cm, a cutting depth of 0.5 mm, and feed rate variations of 0.05 mm/rev and 0.1 mm/rev. The spindle speed used was 900 rpm, and three types of cooling media were applied: palm oil with the inclusion of banana peel cellulose fibers (2%, 3%, and 4%), pure palm oil, and Dromus as a conventional cutting fluid. The results indicate that the inclusion of banana peel cellulose fibers in palm oil effectively reduces the surface roughness of the workpiece compared to pure palm oil and Dromus. The optimal concentration of 3% at a feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev produced the lowest surface roughness. This reduction demonstrates that banana peel cellulose acts as an additional lubricant, enhancing the efficiency of the cutting fluid. The conclusion of this study is that palm oil with the inclusion of banana peel cellulose fibers can serve as an environmentally friendly alternative cutting fluid that is more effective in improving machining quality compared to pure palm oil and Dromus.
