Abstract
This research analyzes the application of translation techniques on adjective phrases found in the short story “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe into Indonesian, “Kucing Hitam” translated by Anton Kurnia. The theory of Collins, Peter, and Carmellia Hollo (2017) is used to determine the forms of adjective phrases, and the theory of Molina and Albir (2002) is used to identify the translation technique. The source of this research is only the short story “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe and its Indonesian translation “Kucing Hitam” by Anton Kurnia. The data analysis employs qualitative research with descriptive data. This research shows 36 data points with four forms of adjective phrases: Adv + Adj 22 data, Adv + Adv + Adj 4 data, Adj + PP 2 data, and Adv + Adj + PP 8 data. The translation techniques utilized by the translator in translating the adjective phrases found in the story are 6 out of 18 translation techniques: Amplification 1 data, Established Equivalent 2 data, Literal Translation 4 data, Modulation 14 data, Particularization 1 data, and Reduction 14 data. The Modulation and Reduction technique appears to be the most dominant translation technique used, with 14 occurrences out of 36 applications.
