Abstract
Fadhli Rasyid. 1810822024. Department of Anthropology. Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. Andalas University. Padang. 2025. Title: “The Role And Perception Of Young Generation In Pandai Sikek Toward Songket Fabric As A Minangkabau Cultural Heritage (A Case Study in Nagari Pandai Sikek, West Sumatra).” Advisor 1: Prof. Dr.rer.soz. Nursyirwan Effendi. Advisor 2: Prof. Dr. Lucky Zamzami, M.Soc.Sc This research is motivated by the declining interest of the young generation in Nagari Pandai Sikek in pursuing the profession of weaving songket fabric, which is a cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people. Although songket fabric holds significant artistic and economic value, the weaving profession is increasingly being abandoned as it is perceived as less promising and incompatible with modern developments. Factors such as shifts in mindset, social pressure, and modernization influence young people's career choices. The purpose of this research is to identify the role of young generation in Pandai Sikek toward songket fabric, which includes their role in the field of profession as weavers, as sellers, and the use of songket fabric in daily life. It also identifies how the young generation views songket as a Minangkabau cultural heritage, which includes how factors cause low interest in songket fabric among some young generation. It also discusses the obstacles and challenges faced in preserving songket fabric and the hopes and future of songket fabric among the young generation. To obtain the data, this research employs a qualitative method using field observation, interviews, literature review, and documentation techniques. The findings of this study indicate that the main factors leading to the low interest in the weaving profession among some young generation include negative perceptions of the job, low economic appreciation, and the influence of modern education that directs them toward other careers. Nevertheless, young people continue to show concern for the preservation of songket fabric through design innovation, the use of social media for marketing, and exploration within the fashion industry. Therefore, support from various stakeholders is necessary to create an ecosystem that enables the regeneration of weavers while encouraging the creativity of the younger generation in developing Pandai Sikek songket fabric.
