Abstract
This study was aimed to the investigate diversity of sea cucumber, in the waters of Natuna, Riau Islands in June 2009. Samples were taken from Sepempang and Pengadah beach using a transect quadrant of 5x5 m. Analyses on the sea cucumber community structure were based on its diversity, equitability, similarity, density and frequency of occurance. There are 16 species from two families: Holothuriidae and Stichopodidae. were found at both locations. The highest diversity index (H) is 3.256, high equitability index (e) is 0.993 and low similarity index (S) is 11,7%. The highest density of species is 0.0032 ind/m². The highest frequency of occurance is 27.71% by H. atra. Antioxidant activity of sea cucumber used DPPH method. The extract of Stichopus vastus showed the highest among others antioxidant activity with percentage inhibition of 57.35%. Phytochemical identification on methanol extract of sea cucumber showed that terpenoid and fenolic were the major component. This finding suggested that terpenoid and fenolic are responsible for antioxidant activity.
