Abstract

Agam Regency is an area whose economic structure is dominated by the agricultural sector. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the increase in the number of poor people in 2023 in Agam Regency is higher than in other regencies/cities in West Sumatra Province. This research aims to identify priority commodities and the growth and competitiveness of these priority commodities so that they are a priority for development in Agam Regency. This research used Location Quotient (LQ) analysis and Shift Share Analysis (SSA). The objects used are agricultural commodities in the horticultural crops, food, and perennial subsectors, along with the scope of research on commodity production in Agam Regency and West Sumatra Province. The results of the study show that the priority agricultural commodities are bird’s eye chili, mangosteen, pomelo, eggplant, bean, watermelon, chayote, melon (horticultural crops subsector), paddy (food crops subsector), coconuts, coffee, sugarcane, areca nut and cinnamon (perennial crops subsector). Commodities that are competitive are mangosteen, watermelon, melon, coffee, and areca nut. The main priority commodities to be developed are coffee and areca nuts. The second priority is mangosteen, watermelon, and melon. The third priority is eggplant, paddy, sugarcane, and cinnamon; the fourth is bird’s eye chili, siamese orange, bean, chayote, and coconut.
