Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the forms of English Noun Phrases and translation techniques used in English Noun Phrases found in the short story “The Selfish Giant” by Oscar Wilde into Indonesian. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods to analyze and describe the translation techniques used in short story entitled “The Selfish Giant” by Oscar Wilde. The data in this research was collected from online English book (SL) entitled The Happy Prince and The Other Stories (1888) and offline Bahasa Indonesia book (TL) Pangeran Bahagia (2015) by Oscar Wilde. The data were collected from the English Noun Phrases and the translation into Indonesian. The researcher analyzed the forms of English Noun Phrases and what techniques used by translator in translating the short story based on translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The result of this research is the writer found there are 9 translation techniques used by translator to translate “The Selfish Giant” short story by Oscar Wilde. They are: Calque, borrowing, literal translation, linguistic amplification, generalization, reduction, description, transposition, and modulation. The total of the nine techniques is 114 times used when translating data into Indonesian. Each data uses one technique when translating English Noun Phrases. Of the nine techniques, the reduction technique was the most frequently occurring in the data with 51 (44.73%) occurrences and was followed by linguistic amplification with 25 (21.92%) occurrences in the data.
