Abstract

Healthcare-associated Infection (HAI) refers to infections that arise during treatment in healthcare facilities. HAIs are commonly found in teaching hospitals. Due to the invasive procedures in intensive care units, door handles are at risk of becoming a medium for germ transmission. This study was descriptive quantitative research aimed at identifying the types and number of pathogenic bacterial colonies on door handles in the intensive care unit of Andalas University Hospital. Purposive sampling was used with a total of 13 doors sampled at two different times, before and after disinfection. There were 6 types of pathogenic bacteria found before disinfection Listeria sp. (43,75%) Pseudomonas sp. (18,75%), S. aureus and Neisseria sp. (12,5%), and then Streptococcus hemolytic and Klebsiella sp. (6,25%). Meanwhile, after disinfection, there were 7 types of pathogenic bacteria Listeria sp. and S. aureus (22,22%) and then Corynebacterium sp., Neisseria sp., Shigella sp., Proteus sp., and Pseudomonas sp. (11,11%). The addition of pathogenic bacteria types can occur due to the repeated use of the same cloth for all door handles. The average number of bacterial colonies before disinfection was 96,04 CFU/cm2, while after disinfection was 12,35 CFU/cm2. A total of 61,54% of door handles did not meet the environmental standards as per the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation. The most common pathogenic bacteria found before disinfection was Listeria sp. and after disinfection was Listeria sp. and S. aureus. The number of bacterial colonies ranged from 1,49 to 240 CFU/cm² before cleaning and from 0 to 83,33 CFU/cm² after cleaning.
