Abstract

This research discusses the type of English adverbials found in the Ten Indian story and the translation techniques used in translating them into Indonesian. This research aimed to analyze every English adverbial found in the Ten Indians story based on Burton-Roberts (2011), which then followed by analyzing the translation techniques used in translating them into Indonesia following the theory of translation from Molina & Albir (2002) and Mona Baker (1992). The data was retrieved from the original story Ten Indians by Ernest Hemingway and its translated version Sepuluh Indian by Maggie Tiojakin. The data were analyzed using qualitative research methods which were then presented descriptively. The results of this study show that there were 47 adverbials, which consist of only 1 out of the 2 types of English adverbials, which is adjunct adverbials with 47 appearances, left the sentence adverbials with zero appearance. This may be due to avoid the use of adverbial excessively to invite the readers to lean in the story and become more engaged. The translation techniques were used 51 times in translating the English adverbials, where most of the adverbials used one technique, but some also used more than one technique. The techniques used were adaptation (2), amplification (14), borrowing (1), calque (2), established equivalent (2), literal translation (6), modulation (7), particularization (3), reduction (3), transposition (8) and the additional technique, omission (3). The amplification technique came out as the dominating type with 14 out of 51 appearances, while borrowing as the least used type with only 1 appearance. This may due to the lack of details in the original story that might cause confusion for the reader, so that Tiojakin used amplification technique more than the other technique in order to complete the details and information of the story.
