Abstract

This research is about impoliteness strategies found in netizens’ comments or replies to official MotoGP Twitter account posts mentioning Marc Marquez. The research aims to identify the types of impoliteness strategies based on Culpeper's theory (1996) and to analyze the function of impoliteness based on Culpeper's theory (2011). The data collection method used in this research is non-participant observation. The data were taken from netizen comments on 27 tweets on the official MotoGP account that mentioned Marc Marquez posted from June 16, 2023, to June 18, 2023. The results of the research are presented descriptively and in the form of tables. The results showed that of the 27 tweets, 88 netizen comments containing impoliteness were found. In the classification of types of impoliteness strategies, four types of impoliteness were found, which are (1) Negative Impoliteness 35 times (39.77%), (2) Positive Impoliteness 28 times (31.81%), (3) Bald on record 19 times (21.59%), and (4) Sarcasm or mock politeness 6 times (6.81%). The dominant type of impoliteness used by netizens is negative impoliteness, in which netizens often condescend and mock Marquez's bad racing performance because he frequently crashed during the 2023 MotoGP Germany series. The withhold politeness strategy is not found in netizen comments or replies because netizens tend to express their emotions and hatred towards Marc Marquez by giving their comments directly rather than using withholding politeness such as being silent. In addition, netizens use two types of impoliteness functions in their comments: affective impoliteness 77 times (87.5%) and entertaining impoliteness 11 times (12.5%). The function of coercive impoliteness is not found in netizen comments or replies because netizens do not have the social power or authority over Marc Marquez to perform this function, so they are not in a position to impose their will or expect certain results from their comments. Affective impoliteness is the most dominant function used by netizens because they tend to show emotional responses, such as anger and hatred towards the attitudes and incidents caused by Marc Marquez during the 2023 MotoGP Germany series.
