Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzes the use of English in the linguistic landscape found on signboards and textual elements such as wall displays and information signs that use English sentences found in coffee shops in four areas, namely Jati, Bandar Purus, Ujung Gurun and Veteran in Padang City, this research aims to analyze the function of the language used on the signboards of coffee shops as well as the language distribution patterns used, the researcher uses the theory of three metafunctions that focus on interpersonal functions by Halliday (2007) and the theory of distribution patterns by Spolsky (1998). The researcher used descriptive qualitative methods, namely observation and documentation methods. The main data of this research are 20 coffee shops that focus on signboards and textual elements such as wall hangings and information signs that use English. The results show that there are 34 sentences, consisting of 27 declarative sentences and 7 imperative sentences. In addition, 11 coffee shops use monolingual, while nine coffee shops use bilingual. Of the 72 single words analyzed, the dominance of nouns (38 words) was found, followed by verbs (18 words), adjectives (15 words), and adverbs (2 words). These results illustrate the distribution pattern of English that reflects the identity of the coffee shops as well as the influence of social and cultural factors in the textual elements. Keywords: linguistics landscape, coffee shops, signboards, language functions, Padang ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menganalisis penggunaan bahasa Inggris dalam lanskap linguistik yang terdapat pada papan nama dan element tekstual seperti pajangan dinding dan tanda informasi yang menggunakan kalimat bahasa inggris yang terdapat pada coffee shops di empat daerah yaitu Jati, Bandar Purus, Ujung Gurun dan Veteran di Kota Padang, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fungsi bahasa yang digunakan pada papan nama coffee shops serta pola distribusi bahasa yang digunakan, peneliti menggunakan teori tiga metafungsi yang berfokus pada fungsi interpersonal oleh Halliday (2007) dan teori pola distribusi oleh Spolsky (1998). Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif, yaitu metode observasi dan dokumentasi. Data utama penelitian ini adalah 20 kedai kopi yang berfokus pada papan nama dan element tekstual seperti hiasan dinding dan tanda informasi yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat 34 kalimat, terdiri dari 27 kalimat deklaratif dan 7 kalimat imperatif. Selain itu, 11 kedai kopi menggunakan monolingual, sedangkan 9 kedai kopi menggunakan bilingual. Dari 72 kata tunggal yang dianalisis, ditemukan dominasi kata benda (38 kata), diikuti oleh kata kerja (18 kata), kata sifat (15 kata), dan kata keterangan (2 kata).
