Abstract

Young adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) face various challenges in their lives, such as feeling easily overwhelmed when managing multiple tasks at once, dealing with others' lack of understanding, struggling to control their thoughts, having negative self-evaluations, and experiencing limited social interactions. These challenges significantly impact their quality of life (QoL). This study aims to explore the QoL of young adults with HFASD. The research adopts a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, with criteria including ages 18–40 years, an HFASD diagnosis, no communication impairments, and an IQ ≥ 90. The data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The findings reveal five main themes that describe the QoL of young adults with HFASD: (i) difficulty blending in with others, (ii) inflexibility in daily life, (iii) feeling accepted by close relations, (iv) feeling misunderstood by many people, and (v) self-evaluation of their life and condition. Based on these themes, it was found that participants were able to accept their condition as individuals with HFASD. They recognized that their standards for themselves and their lives differ from most people. Despite this, they continue to make adjustments to function well in society.
