Abstract

Functional syntax is a type of syntax that focuses on the role, meaning, and function seen from the form of the sentence. The sentences in the song lyrics are structured based on functional syntax in order to achieve song lyrics that suit their meaning. This research aims to identify the typical role of verbal phrase elements structures in the song lyrics of the Sour album and to find out a reason why the song lyrics appear like that. The data used in this research is existing data with content analysis by the author. The data collected in this research is presented descriptively. The result of the study found that the typical role of verbal phrase elements structures in the song lyrics of Sour album is the headword-only structure and followed by the structure with headword assisted with auxiliary verbs and negative elements. Furthermore, the reason why these verbal phrase elements structures are mostly found if seen with situational context is that the structure makes the song lyrics natural and uncomplicated for listeners to enjoy.
