Abstract
Laundry wastewater contains various pollutants, including dissolved compounds. This study aims to examine the competition and adsorption kinetics modeling of dissolved compounds, including detergents, phosphates, and organic matter (measured as COD) from laundry wastewater using a single column with sand and cocopeat powder as media. The column was made of PVC pipes with a 5 cm diameter, 40 cm height, and a 30 cm media height with a 1:1 ratio of sand and cocopeatpowder in both separate and mixed conditions. The experiment was conducted with downflow and influent flow rates of 9.6 L/h and 14.4 L/h over 48 hours. Parameter analysis was performed using spectrophotometry at wavelengths of 652 nm, 880 nm, and 600 nm for detergent, phosphate, and COD, respectively. The highest average removal efficiency was obtained in the mixed media column with an influent flow rate of 9.6 L/h, achieving removal efficiencies of 43.32% for detergent, 35.18% for phosphate, and 56.51% for COD. The highest adsorption capacity was found in the mixed media column with a flow rate of 14.4 L/h, reaching 17.06 mg/g for detergent, 59.44 mg/g for phosphate, and 973.32 mg/g for COD. The results indicate that organic material, as measured by COD, is the most dominantly removed parameter due to the π-π bond interactions in cocopeat powder, which interact better with organic compounds than with phosphate. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models are suitable for describing the adsorption process of detergents, phosphates, and organic matter from laundry wastewater, with R² values of 0.914-0.991, assuming a mass transfer model heavily influenced by the influent flow rate.
