Abstract

The purpose of this study is to uncover the interpersonal meanings that are realized in five selected news articles from The Jakarta Post and TEMPO.CO in the context of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election debates by using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) viewpoint. By analyzing the interpersonal meanings in the selected articles, the study finds how the writers position themselves in relation to their readers and the political figures they portray. This study employs a qualitative research methodology. The data source is two articles from The Jakarta Post and three articles from TEMPO.CO, all under the categories of the 2024 presidential election debate. The data were analyzed through textual analysis and close reading techniques. The analysis focused on key aspects of SFL’s interpersonal meanings including mood, modality, and register. The results of this research are as follows: (1) The declarative mood is frequently used across all five articles with 97% for TJP and 99% for TC. The sentences are mostly realized by temporal deicticity, while modality appears in small percentages (8% for TJP1, 17% for TJP2, 10% for TC1, 15% for TC2, and 0% for TC3). Neutral modality shows the writers position themselves as an equal to the reader that is the Indonesia’s citizens who will vote for during the presidential election. (2) Both TJP and TC potray Anies Baswedan positively but with different emphases. TJP highlights Baswedan’s personal attributes and political background so that his public image appears as a relatable and trustworthy leader. TC emphasizes Baswedan’s political expertise and policy proposals so that his public image appears to be knowledgeable and proactive presidential candidate. This distinction in focus reflects the different strategies employed by TJP and TC to shape public perception during the election period. TJP and TC employ similar tenor patterns where they position themselves as equals to their readers and conveying a positive tone in their interactions. The implications of these findings show media objectivity and journalistic practices in Indonesia. While the predominance of declarative clauses and third-person perspectives in both TJP and TC suggests an objective reporting, the strategic highlighting of Baswedan’s positive attributes raises questions about media neutrality. The findings emphasize the importance of media literacy for readers. By understanding mood, modality, and register, readers can further understand how language is used to shape narratives and influence public perceptions, even potentially impacting public decisionmaking during election periods.
