Abstract

This research explores the issue of racial injustice as portrayed in Janae Marks' novel From the Desk of Zoe Washington through the experiences of Zoe and her family. The aims of this research are (1) to reveal how the novel depicts the unfair treatment of black Americans and the types of injustices they experience; (2) to examine how the novel reflects contemporary issues of racism in Boston; and (3) to identify the rules and systems in the novel that contribute to racial injustice. A qualitative descriptive method is used in this research, which is analyzed through sociological approach. Joe R. Feagin's theory of systemic racism is applied to analyze the forms of racial injustice in the novel. The results show that several forms of racial injustice are portrayed, including institutional racism, racial stereotyping, and discrimination. The novel depicts Boston as a city with a complex, ongoing, and systemic problem of racism. Furthermore, the research highlights several regulations that contribute to racial
