Abstract
The Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a control system for regulate the generator output voltage automatically by adjusting the rotor excitation current. This final project analyzes AVR performance using the Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) method with the First Order Plus Dead Time (FOPDT) approach and discusses controlling system performance responses in the time and frequency domain, as well as stability analysis. AVR systems consists of generator, excitation, amplifiers, sensors, and control systems using Z- N methods with the FOPDT approach modeled using MatLab software. This study uses performance analysis in the time, frequency domain and stability analysis which produces parameters in the form of steady state errors, maximum passing values, reinforcement margins, phase margins, resonance peak values, and resonance peak frequency values. The results obtained from this study show that the error analysis based on frequency response and the transfer function method for the PI and PID controller has met the design criteria, while for the P controller it has not met the design criteria. For transitional analysis based on frequency response, the three controllers (P, PI, PID) have not met the design criteria, while the transition analysis is based on the transfer function method, only PID controllers have met the design criteria. In the open loop analysis in the frequency domain based on frequency response, all controllers have not fulfilled the design criteria, whereas based on the transfer function method, all controllers have met the design criteria. For closed loop analysis in the frequency domain based on frequency response, all controllers do not meet the design criteria, and analysis based on the transfer function method, only PI and PID controllers have met the design criteria. For stability analysis based on frequency response and transfer function method, all controllers meet the desired design criteria. Overall it can be concluded that a good controller on the AVR system using the Z-N method with the FOPDT approach is a PID controller based on the transfer function method.
