Abstract
Increasing corn production can be done by extensifying marginal areas such as acid soil. The problem with acidic soil is low soil fertility and high Al content which can poison corn plants. An approach that can be taken is the use of tolerant corn varieties. This research aims to obtain Al-tolerant corn varieties on nutrient culture media that are subjected to AlCl3 stress and to determine the growth and production of corn on sub-optimal land that experiences Al-stress. This research was carried out from January to June 2024. The research was carried out in the Tissue Culture Laboratory, Andalas University Greenhouse and Animal Structure and Development Laboratory, FMIPA Andalas University as well as land in Sitiung District, Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra. This research consists of two stages. The first stage of the experiment was screening Al-tolerant corn varieties through nutrient culture. This research is a factorial experiment consisting of two factors using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which was repeated 3 times. The first factor is the corn variety which consists of 6 levels, namely (JH37, P32, Nasa 29, Bisi 18, Lamuru and Sukmaraga), and the second factor is the AlCl3 concentration which consists of two levels, namely (0 ppm and 180 ppm), so that 36 experimental unit. The results of research at this stage obtained 3 Al-tolerant corn varieties, namely varieties (P32, Bisi 18 and Lamuru), and the Sukmaraga variety as a sensitive corn variety which was described as adaptive in acid soil. The second stage is a continuation of the first stage of the experiment, namely testing Al tolerant varieties in the field using cow manure. This experiment was a factorial experiment consisting of two factors designed according to a Randomized Block Design (RAK) which was repeated 3 times. The first factor is the Al tolerant variety as a result of screening in phase 1 of the experiment which consists of 4 levels, namely (P32, Bisi 18, Lamuru and Sukmaraga). The second factor is the dose of cow manure which consists of 3 levels, namely (0 ton/ha, 5 tons/ha and 10 tons/ha), so that 36 experimental units are obtained. The data obtained was tested for F at the 5% level if the Fhit value > F table followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results of the research showed that there were two corn varieties (P32 and Bisi 18) that provided the best growth and yield in the yield components of cob length, number of cobs, shelled cob weight, and yield potential per hectare
