Abstract
Literature is a reflection of society, reflecting the formation of society, functions, and characteristics of society itself. Novels can describe social conditions that occur at a certain time and place. This research aims to explore the role of Victorian women as depicted in the novel "Agnes Grey" by Anne Brontë. Using qualitative methods that rely on verbal and non-numerical data, this study uses a sociological approach to analyze themes about image and role of women, governesses, family, and marriage, especially in the Victorian era. "Agnes Grey" serves as a fictional depiction of the social lives of women who worked as governesses in that era. The findings of this research reveal three main aspects of the representation of Victorian women in this novel: social and domestic roles, educational and career boundaries, and marriage and family life. The study concluded that "Agnes Grey" accurately reflects the role of Victorian women in the time in which it was written. These findings enrich the understanding of literature and provide insight for those interested in the role of women in the Victorian era as depicted in literary works
