Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to identify types and meanings of idiom as found in Asia Times written by John Mcbeth. There are 5 news articles about politics taken as source of data in electronic version of Asia Times. Theory of idiom from Palmer (1976) is used to identify the types of idiom. Theory of meaning from Leech (1981) is used to find the meanings of each idiom which is related to dictionary. The result of analysis shows that there are 30 idioms. There 3 types of idiom, they are phrasal verb, prepositional verb, and partial idiom. 17 idioms for type of phrasal verb, 10 idioms for type of prepositional verb, and 3 idioms for type of partial idiom. Phrasal verb is the most common idiom. The meaning of idiom is found by using Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2010), McGraw-Hill’s Dictionary of American Idiom (2005), and some related online dictionary. Idiom has more than one meaning, so context is used to find the meaning of idiom. Keywords:Semantics, Idiom, News, Asia Times. ABSTRAK Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk- bentuk idiom dan makna idiom yang ada pada berita politik dalam Asia Times ditulis oleh John Mcbeth. Ada 5 artikel berita yang diambil sebagai sumber data melalui versi koran elektronik Asia Times pada artikel politik. Teori idiom yang dikemukakan oleh Palmer (1976) digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk- bentuk idiom. Teori makna yang dikemukakan oleh Leech (1981) digunakan untuk mendukung penelitian ini dalam menemukan makna setiap idiom yang berkaitan dengan kamus. Hasil analisis menunjukkan ada 30 idiom secara keseluruhan. Idiom tersebut terbagi atas 3 bentuk, yaitu phrasal verb, prepositional verb, dan partial idiom. Phrasal verb sebanyak 17 idiom, prepositionl verb sebanyak 10 idiom, dan partial idiom sebanyak 3 idiom. Phrasal verb adalah bentuk idiom yang paling banyak muncul. Makna idiom dapat diketahui dengan merujuk pada Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2010), McGraw-Hill’s Dictionary of American Idiom (2005), dan juga kamus online. Idiom mempunyai makna lebih dari satu, oleh sebab itu, penggunaan konteks akan membantu dalam menemukan makna idiom. Kata Kunci: Semantik, Idiom, Berita, Asia Times
