Abstract

This research aims to analyze subtitling strategy that the translator used translate the English taboo words that are found in the subtitle of the movie “Pulp Fiction” (1994) directed by Quentin Tarantino. This research used descriptive qualitative methods. The data of this research was taken from a website to watch movie titled “Pulp Fiction”. This research used the theory of subtitling strategy by Gottlieb (1992). The researcher found that there are 196 utterances of taboo words in the dialogue of the movie and after analyzing the data, the researcher reduced the data into 15 dialogues scene and 26 utterances of taboo words. The result of this research showed that there are six subtitling strategy used by the translator to translate the taboo words of the movie “Pulp Fiction” into Indonesian. The six strategies found are paraphrase, deletion, transcription, transfer, decimation and condensation. The most used strategy by the translator to translate the bad words are deletion and paraphrase.
