Abstract

This research discusses the Malay and English code-mixing that occurs in the utterances in the YouTube video uploads of Mikhailimaan, a Malaysian YouTube content creator. This study aims to explore the types and factors of code-mixing by Hoffmann's (1991) theory. The data was taken from Mikhailimaan's official YouTube channel which was uploaded in April 2023 and contained one speaker. The data was analyzed using qualitative research methods and the results were presented descriptively. The results of this study showed that from the two videos analyzed, 40 forms of utterances containing code-mixing were found. In the classification of types, 40 data were found. The dominant type used by speakers in Mikhailimaan's YouTube videos is Intra-Sentential Code-Mixing 38 times (95%). This is because it allows viewers to still understand the utterances in the video. In addition, it can also demonstrate the speaker's ability to speak more than one language. In the classification based on factors, there were 53 data. The dominant factor used by speakers in Mikhailimaan's YouTube videos is Intention of Clarifying the Speech Content for Interlocutor 15 times (28%). This happens because it ensures the viewers understand his utterance's context when code-mixing occurs. The speaker's speech in Mikhailiman's YouTube videos shows a mixture of languages, Malay and English. This is most likely due to the strength of English as a second language in Malaysia and a reflection of a bilingual person.
