Abstract

Over the past few years, the divorce rate in Indonesia has continued to increase. In fact, divorce has an impact on young adult offspring in building and maintaining intimate relationships with partners. This study aimed to describe adult attachment and fear of intimacy in young adults who come from divorced families in West Sumatra. This study was a descriptive quantitative with a total of 101 young adults obtained through voluntary response sampling technique. The measuring instruments used were Experience in Close Relationship-Revised (ECR-R) and Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS) which are adapted into Indonesian. The results showed that 76 subjects (75.2%) had a low fear of intimacy. This means that individuals do not feel inhibited in expressing their personal thoughts and feelings to their partners. In addition, this study also showed that subjects tend to feel anxiety and most of them were categorized as insecure adult attachment. This means that individuals have great concerns about being abandoned by their partners and/or individuals are not comfortable in depending on their partners.
