Abstract

This thesis discusses the analysis of sentences in comparable journalistic texts from CNN and ANTARA sources written in English. The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences and similarities found in comparable texts. The various types of sentences such as simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, are analyzed in this research. The writer identifies every sentence contained in the texts. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the dependent clause type in complex sentences found in the texts and observes the differences in the usage of sentences in each text. Data analysis used a qualitative method. The writer refers to the theory of Sauter and Verspoor (2000) to analyze the type of sentences. The writer analyzed 71 sentences contained in the 6 texts. 35 sentences from CNN and 36 sentences from ANTARA. From the results of data collection, the writer found the first finding, which was the types of sentences in CNN, the writer found simple sentence (14,29%), compound sentences (20%), complex sentences (54,29%) , and compound-complex sentences (11,42% ) . Meanwhile, from ANTARA there were simple sentences (25%), compound sentences (8,33%) , complex sentences (55,56%) and compound-complex sentences (11,11%) were found. The next finding is related to the type of dependent clauses found in the complex sentences contained in CNN are adjective clauses (31,58%) and adverb clauses (68,42%) without any noun clause found. In ANTARA, adjective clauses (10%) , adverb clauses (80%), and noun clauses (10%) were found. The last conclusion is the sentence pattern used in CNN is the declarative pattern (100%) , while ANTARA used declarative pattern (97,22%) and interrogative pattern (2,78%). Also in the use of quotations or direct speech, no quotations are found in CNN source texts, meanwhile in ANTARA, there are 10 quotations
