Abstract

Clause complex relation, is a term for a group of clauses that form a sentence where there is an increasing or developing process to the main clause which aims to approach the reader in understanding tite meaning or message conveyed in a sentence. In English linguistics, there are two types of relationships between clauses in a sentence, namely projection and expansion, which has more specific branches and has its own function in a sentence. The expansion consists of extension, enhancement and elaboration, while projection has locution and idea, which each has its own function in a sentence. This study aims to identify the types of clause complex relations used by the journalist of sports article theguardian.com site using qualitative approach by following the theoretical basis of complex clauses described by M.A.K. Halliday. The results of this study were then described using a descriptive method based on the theory of systemic functional linguistics. The writer foiuid that tliere are 121 clause complex relations occurs in both texts combined, consisting of 111 expansions or 91,73%, and 10 projections or 8,26%, which the dominant use of expansion in the texts has a purpose to provide the readers with an accurate information by explaining and developing the clauses with a detail explanation in each.
